Abstract:
Musculoskeletal Diseases (MSD) are one of the main health issues in howadays industry. Tasks involving manual material handling (MMH) are still very common in manufacturing, maintenance and logistic applications, causing an important number of work related injuries. Industrial robotics, including cobots, are always more present in industry, helping human operators in the most demanding physical tasks. Unfortunately, not all the tasks can be adapted. Wearable assistive robots, commonly called exoskeletons, are a potential solution for these applications. Most of the first exoskeleton models deployed in industry are passive, since they use mechanical elements to provide assistance to the operator. While this kind of devices are simple, low-weight and inexpensive, they present important limitations from the adaptive and level of assistance point of view. Active exoskeletons on the other hand, have the capability to adapt to the wearer intention, improving considerably the usability. Even if they are currently more complex, heavier and more expensive than passive exoskeletons, latest developments are improving these aspects as well as increasing the level of versatility, which will help to the introduction of these devices in real scenarios.
Biography:
PhD in New Automobile Technologies, University of Zaragoza (2008). He worked as a researcher in the Area of Transports and in the Area of Mechanics of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Zaragoza. In 2004 he was guest professor at the “ENSI de Bourges”. From 2006 he is working at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) and he is currently the head of the Wearable Robots, Exoskeletons and Exosuits Laboratory (XoLab) at the department of Advanced Robotics (ADVR). His principal research fields are industrial exoskeletons and soft wearable assistive devices. Previous research experience includes motion bases, driving simulators, teleoperation, telepresence, teleexistence, virtual reality, GPGPU computing and medical robotics.
